Makeshift stores and eateries built illegally along Vung Tau’s Bai Sau (Back Beach) have been taken down to give back open space to beachgoers.

This row of bamboo-frame seafood eateries at the New Wave Tourist Area on Thuy Van Street was demolished Friday afternoon. The establishments were also made of wood, thatched roofs and tarps.

The Ba Ria Vung Tau Construction & Urban Development Co. was licensed to do business in the area in 1996.

The company spent VND122 billion (US$5.2 million) renovating the beach and now rents sections of it to other companies and local businesses. But several businesses renting premises on the 28-hectare area along Bai Sau have been found using the area illegally.

Most of the projects demolished on Friday were blocking the sea view and obstructing paths leading to the beach.

Nguyen Trung Hue, a New Wave Tourist Area employee in charge of renting umbrellas and benches, said the demolition means that he’ll lose his job, from which he’s been earning VND8 million (US$340) per month.

"I'm pretty sad," he said.

Next to New Wave, illegal projects at the San Ho Xanh Tourist Area have also been dismantled, opening up pathways to the beach.
