Commuters drive through floodwaters on Nguyen Trai Street in Can Tho's downtown district of Ninh Kieu at 9 p.m. on Wednesday.
Tides on Hau River reached 2.27 meters at 7 p.m. Wednesday, which was two centimeters higher than the historic level recorded in 2019.
The high tide continues early Thursday, staying at 2.22 meters.
The tide along with heavy rain submerged a series of streets in Ninh Kieu, with Cach Mang Thang Tam flooded the worst, lying 0.3-0.7 meters under water.
A motorbike is left in the middle of Ly Tu Trong Street after its engine was shut down by floodwaters.
Residents bail floodwater out of an interior design shop on Tran Hung Dao Street.
"I have never seen such horrible and prolonged flooding like this after more than 60 years living in Can Tho," said the shop's owner.
High tides on the Hau River have flooded streets and houses in the city since Monday.
