Part of the Truong Han Sieu Road next to the Da River which has over 5,000 tons of trash.
Truong Han Sieu is one of the key roads serving Hoa Binh, the capital city of Hoa Binh Province.
Over a kilometer-long section thousands of tons of rubbish are under plastic sheets, which are torn here and there.
The trash, which has piled up over nearly two years, has begun to leach into the environment and stink.
After numerous complaints, finally, at the end of November, Hoa Binh authorities began to transport the trash to a waste treatment plant. The process will be completed within a month.
Around 15 km from Hoa Binh City, 5 ha of forests in Doc Lap Commune have been turned into a landfill since 2021.
The trash can be seen decomposing and leaking. But garbage has not been transported there since August 2021, and 5,000 tons remain in the area.
The trash caused an environmental issue in 2021 when leachates from the trash entered the Chanh Stream in Luong Son District 5 km away. City authorities had to reinforce its reservoirs to prevent contamination.
There is another temporary landfill in Quang Tien Commune next to the Hoa Lac-Hoa Binh Highway. Set up 16 months ago it now has around 3,000 tons of trash.
It is surrounded by fences and so is difficult to detect.
It is around 2 km away from the Song Da water plant which supplies water to Hanoi.
Locals complain they can smell the stench whenever it is sunny though the landfill is covered with plastic sheets.
Another landfill is inside the Mong Hoa Industrial Park in Ky Son District, which contains around 1,000 tons of trash.
As of the end of October Hoa Binh had around 11,488 tons of untreated waste, and the city generates 75 tons every day.
Hoa Binh authorities said a large amount of trash remains untreated because the Hoang Long waste treatment plant in Luong Son District, with a capacity of 50-80 tons a day, has been overloaded and degraded. The firm was also found to have violated environmental regulations.
The Thinh Minh waste treatment facility in Thinh Minh Commune (pictured), situated about 20 km away from Hoa Binh City, is currently not operational because the roads leading to it have not been completed.
