A two-km Cua Dai beach stretch suffered severe erosion after days of bombardment by strong waves. In an area of Cam An Ward, four homes and a restaurant partially collapsed.
Weather patterns triggered by storm Nesat sent powerful waves crashing onto the shore on October 19.
A long crack on a wall of Hoi An resident Nguyen Phung's house is more than five meters long. The rear portion of the house collapsed due to erosion.
"Storms Noru and Son Ca (in previous weeks) only caused mild erosion, but the waters rose on October 19 due to impacts of Storm Nesat, invading our home and sweeping 15 meters of land into the sea.
After just one night, the foundation of our home got torn apart, and wall at the back of the house was swept away," Phung said.
About 10 meters away from Phung's home, another house also collapsed due to waves coming from behind. The foundation of the house was eroded by about a meter.
Nguyen Thi Hoa lost 600 square meters of coastal land to the erosion.
"Waves after waves, as high as 3 m, crashed onto the shore, taking sand and soil with them," she said.
About 2 km away from the collapsed house, dozens of restaurants on An Bang beach were also affected by erosion. In just one night, the water encroached 5 meters into the land.
Dinh Ly uses bamboo sections and sand bags to fortify structures near the beach.
Nguyen Van Tai (L), a restaurant owner, helps workers to make an embankment with sand bags.
"Every time there's erosion, a lot of sand is lost, so more must be brought in to keep the restaurant safe. Otherwise, the water will enter very deep and sweep things away," Tai said, adding that he hoped the government will come up with plans to restore the beach so people could do business.
