Rising tides on the Hau River in the Mekong Delta flooded several streets in Can Tho City, causing traffic jams on Monday.

Tides went up as high as 0.5 m in certain areas. On Cach Mang Thang Tam Street in Ninh Kieu District, a motorbike engine shut down as a woman was trying to take her children to school. A passerby helped push the bike away from the traffic.

Nguyen Dang Khoa, vice director of the Can Tho Department of Transport, said water levels were high on certain streets, like Cach Mang Thang Tam, Xo Viet Nghe Tinh and Mau Than. Meanwhile, certain locations that used to be flooded in the past, like Nguyen Van Cu Street and the IC3 intersection, were not affected thanks to recent upgrades.

Militia personnel and youth club members were deployed to heavily flooded areas to help students get to school on time and get people to travel safely.

Nguyen Quy Ninh, office head of the Can Tho Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue, said the unit has requested the Can Tho Department of Education and Training to forecast the tides and adjust time frames for students to come and leave classes, ensuring the safety of both students and teachers.

On Sunday night, the rising tides forced people living on one end of Cach Mang Thang Tam Street to use plates to block water from entering their houses.

The Can Tho Hydro-Meteorological Station said the peak of the tides on Hau River on Monday morning was at 2.13 m, the highest level seen in the last four days. Water level in the river is expected to be at the same level on Monday night.
