A rendering of the entrance to Nguyen Hue Flower Street, decorated to ring in the Year of the Cat.
This year marks the 20th year Flower Street has brightened the heart of the city on Nguyen Hue Boulevard.
For 600 meters, the Flower Street will blossom with 88 floral species and 18 other kinds of plants. Some 106,000 pots and flower baskets will be arranged aside more than 300 sq.m of grass.
The street will be open from 7 p.m. on January 19, three days before the new lunar year, until 9 p.m. on January 26.
The giant cats guarding the gate – 0.8-4.5 meters-tall each – will be painted to look like ceramic products.
The diorama’s highlight will be a pair of even larger cats rising 4.5m and 5.5m tall decorated with more than 2,900 baskets of real flowers.
The structures lining the boulevard will be made mostly of bamboo.
Ho Chi Minh City policies mandate that all Flower Street décor be constructed out of environmentally friendly-materials.
Flower sculptures representing all 12 of the Eastern Zodiac animals will also be on display: mouse, buffalo, tiger, cat, dragon, snake, horse, goat, monkey, chicken, dog, and pig.
For the first time ever, Nguyen Hue Flower Street will also feature a glass pedestrian bridge, 40m long and 1.8m above the ground.
Two more big cats will greet visitors at a landscape installation designed to represent HCMC as a "smart city."
