Space under the Rach Chiec Bridge in Thu Duc City has been surrounded with a 3-meter-high iron barrier to prevent littering and protect the structure below the bridge.
Before the fence was set up, street vendors usually gathered here, resulting in people coming for food and drink and discarding waste. At night, addicts also used the area to consume drugs.
On the other side, the space under the bridge has been left open and as a result is filled with various types of domestic trash.
A sign warning people of a surveillance camera is ignored and leans over to one side.
Aside from the fences, authorities have turned the rest of the space under the bridge into a public park with equipment for exercising.
Playing with her grandson, Huong, 65, said before the renovation project, the space under this bridge was only a gathering point for drunks, drug addicts, and trash.
But now neighborhood citizens are enjoying the new space.
"Ever since there are fences, more people have come to hang out here," Huong said.
Under the Phu My Bridge in District 7, aside from a new fence, two guards have been dispatched to keep watch.
Tran Van Tuan, 50, one of the guards, said before the fence went up, people usually dumped trash under the bridge at night.
"Now with the fence, that has stopped, but sometimes, passers-by still litter food packages here so I have to clean up every day," he said.
