Almost 1,000 motorbikes are gathering dust at a parking lot in HCMC’s Tan Son Nhat airport, with no one showing up to claim them for years.

Put into use in 2016, the parking lot in front of the airport's domestic terminal spreads over six floors to provide space for 10,000 vehicles, including cars and motorbikes.

The operator, TCP JSC, said there are now almost 1,000 motorbikes left unclaimed at the parking lot and many have been abandoned for five to seven years.

All the unclaimed motorbikes have had their gasoline drained and their power source disconnected to prevent any possible threats of fire and explosion.

According to the TCP, it is possible that the owners have decided to leave their motorbikes as parking fares could be higher than the market value of their vehicles.

The motorbike parking fare currently applied at the airport is VND6,000 (US$0.25) for the first four hours. It costs VND4,000 for the next four hours, and VND9,000 for the eight hours after that.

Most of the motorbikes are registered in the southern and Central Highlands provinces.

Due to a lack of storage space, on the 3rd floor of the garage, some spots that were originally places for cars have now been used to keep unclaimed motorbikes.

Mai Thanh Long, a TCP staff, said the company used to sell monthly tickets to keep cars but the parking lot has now run out of space, forcing it to end the service.

TCP has reported the situation to the Southern Airports Authority and related agencies, but no solutions have been found.
