Red Lantern, located in Darlinghurst, Sydney, announced its closure on Nov. 22, 2025, bringing to an end a 25-year journey of showcasing Vietnamese culture in Australia.
The restaurant was co-founded by renowned chef Luke Nguyen, a judge on MasterChef Vietnam, along with his sister Pauline Nguyen and business partner Mark Jensen.
Over the years, Red Lantern earned acclaim for introducing the spirit of down-to-earth Vietnamese dining -- sitting on plastic chairs, eating at street food stalls -- to international diners, and became a familiar gathering place for thousands.
However, following a winter widely regarded as particularly harsh for Sydney's food and beverage industry, the restaurant was forced to cease operations.
Prior to the closure, the founding trio attempted to sustain its appeal through various measures, including maintaining ingredient quality, renovating the space, boosting social media engagement, and even offering haircut services during breaks, but these efforts were ultimately unable to avert the decision.
