Thunderstorms with strong wind gust swept through Districts 1 amd 3 in HCMC downtown as well as Districts 8, 10 and Thu Duc City on the outskirts at around 4 p.m. Sunday.
A tree branch nearly 10 meters long (pictured) broke off and fell onto a car on Ngo Gia Tu Street, District 10.
According to the Southern Regional Hydrometeorological Center, the thunderstorms in HCMC and several southern provinces on Sunday were the impact of a low pressure area which might develop into a tropical depression or storm in the East Sea the coming days.
Thong, 42, the car's driver, said he was driving five people in his family and they were around 300 meters from their home.
"It happened so fast and we were all panicked. Luckily none of us were injured," he said.
Around 5 km away, a tree of nearly 10 meters tall was uprooted on Nguyen Trung Ngan Street, District 1.
More than 100 meters of the street section was then blocked for safety.
Many tree branches also fell on Vo Thi Sau Street in District 1. People living on the street had to pull them onto the sidewalks to clear the road for traffic.
In Thu Duc City, a steel fence that served as a street barrier for an intersection project was partly blown off.
