A 30 m-high embankment collapsed on Hoang Hoa Tham Street in Da Lat's Ward 10, bringing down houses and workers' camps at 3 a.m. Thursday. Seven were trapped in the landslide, two killed and five rescued. The erosion site spans around 3,000 square meters.
As the soil and rubbles came down from above, a two-story house and public lighting system collapsed as well.
Rescuers tried to find two people buried in the rubble on Thursday morning. Their bodies were retrieved at around 12:40 p.m.
Luu Xuan Dua, the son-in-law of the deceased couple, said the pair from Phu Yen Province had traveled to Da Lat with 10 others to work as construction workers. When the landslide occurred, the couple was sleeping inside a tent, while the rest were situated at a nearby construction site.
Earlier in the morning, dozens of rescuers were dispatched to look for victims. A four-story house had its basement collapsed, and part of its first floor was tilted at 30 degrees.
Rescuers gain access into the house. Upon detecting the victims' locations, they used tools to lift structures up and prevent them from collapsing.
Three people take turns finding victims within a small radius, the rubble potentially collapsing on them at any time.
By 4:40 a.m., two hours following the collapse, rescuers managed to get five people out, with two in stable condition and three rushed to hospital.
