Two foreigners wade at the famous Ta Hien beer street in Hanoi's Hoan Kiem District. Many sections of the street were flooded by more than 20 cm.
Hanoi received heavy rains from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., with rainfall of 162 mm recorded in Hoang Mai District, 94.5 mm in Hoan Kiem District, and 85.2 mm in Hai Ba Trung District.
Flooding was heaviest at the intersection of Ta Hien and Luong Ngoc Quyen streets, with water levels reaching up to 50 cm at times.
These streets are usually crowded with tourists, but the flooding on Tuesday night left the shops deserted.
Some customers at an eatery sit on tables to avoid the rising water.
According to the Northern Delta Regional Hydro-Meteorological Station, due to the influence of a low-pressure trough passing through the north and high-altitude wind convergence, Hanoi is expected to experience rain, showers, and thunderstorms, with some areas seeing heavy rain, mainly in the afternoons and evenings, throughout Friday.
Residents placed tables and chairs in the middle of the road to prevent cars from passing and sending water into their homes.
Shopowners on Ta Hien Street put their tables and chairs away as water rose, halting business operations on Tuesday night.
Two tourists apparently found delight while wading through the water on the rain-soaked streets of the Old Quarter.
Staff of a store on Ta Hien Street clean up floating trash in front of the store.
"Every time it floods like this, we can't sell anything, and we have to clean up, wait for the water to recede, and then clean again all night. It's a big loss," said Linh Anh, the store owner.
Nguyen Duc Canh Street at the intersection with Luong Khanh Thien in Hoang Mai District was submerged, with some sections up to knee-deep.
Many vehicles stalled when passing through the flooded area.
Thien, a ride-hailing driver, said it took him nearly an hour to wait for the water to recede before he could move on.
