Hail and tornadoes have been wreaking havoc in several mountainous areas in northern Vietnam, damaging over 1,000 houses and thousands of hectares of crops.

Starting Wednesday, several districts in Ha Giang Province have experienced high levels of hail. In Yen Minh District, clumps of ice could be seen covering the fields and the hills.

Cubes of ice painted the fields of Sung Chang Commune in white.

Hoang Anh Tuan, chairman of Yen Minh District, said authorities are deploying personnel to communes that have suffered damage from the hail to help the people stabilize their lives.

The Ha Giang Steering Committee for National Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue said hail and tornadoes over the last few days had damaged around 1,300 houses and over 270 ha of crops.

In Son La Province, cubes of ice also rained down from the sky and covered farms in Moc Chau on Thursday.

Unripe plums fell to the ground due to hail in Ta Long Commune. Moc Chau natural disaster prevention authorities said around 1,200 ha of fruit trees, including plums and oranges, have been 30-70% damaged.

By Friday morning, hail and tornadoes returned to Chieng Khay Commune, blowing off the roofs of many houses.

Hail that fell upon several areas in Yen Bai Province's Mu Cang Chai District on Thursday damaged over 160 houses, according to the Yen Bai Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue. Hail also returned to certain border communes on March 29.

In Tran Yen District, the Hung Thinh Commune kindergarten had its roof blown off by strong winds. Around 12 ha of crops and forests were also damaged.

Before the hail and tornadoes came, the skies of Yen Bai were plagued with dark clouds at around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday.

In Phu Tho Province, authorities cleaned up fallen trees following rainstorms on Thursday that blew off the roofs of over 400 houses and five schools in Ha Hoa District.

At around 4 p.m. on Friday, the cities of Ha Long and Cam Pha in Quang Ninh Province saw tornadoes and hail for around 20 minutes. Ice cubes as large as human fingers could be seen scattered all over the ground.

Strong winds caused an electric pole in Ha Long to fall down. There were no casualties.

Hail was also present in north-central regions. At around 4 p.m. on Thursday, ice cubes rained on several communes in Nghe An Province for over 20 minutes.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said hail and tornadoes appeared in mountainous areas of northern and north-central Vietnam due to impacts of cold air, low-pressure areas and high-altitude winds.

Northern and north-central regions continued to experience rain on Friday, with levels reaching 10-50 mm in certain areas. Meteorologists warned that March and April are transitional periods from cold to hot weather, meaning abnormal weather patterns such as hail and tornadoes may be expected.
