Dong Nai Province authorities are speeding up work on two anti-flooding projects in Bien Hoa City and Nhon Trach District.

The construction of the anti-flooding project on Dong Khoi Street in downtown Bien Hoa began on July 1 and slated for completion late this year.

When the project is finished, rainwater will follow the new drainage system to the San Mau Stream, which flows into the Dong Nai River.

“Although the flood area lies next to the stream, the current drainage system is too old and dilapidated while the sewer grills are small and usually clogged with garbage, resulting in the chronic flooding,” said an engineer working on the project.

Before starting work on the Dong Khoi Street project, Dong Nai Province had spent more than VND500 billion dredging a 1.6 km section of the stream.

More than 30 km from Bien Hoa, another project is also underway renovating the Ba Ky Canal for VND207 billion in order to save a part of Nhon Trach District from flooding.

The district is home to many industrial parks as well as residential areas, but its existing drainage system has been unable to keep up with demand.

In June, heavy rains lead to flash floods, devastating a residential area in the district’s Hiep Phuoc Town.

The floods destroyed a 500-meter-long street and caused many families to lose their homes and belongings.

The project stretches 4.7 km long and includes work to dredge an existing canal and build roads on the two sides of the waterway.

Work is now 80% complete.

“The dry season has kicked in, so we have to take advantage to push the progress,” said a worker named Son.

Sewers with diameter of 1 m are built every 100 m along the canal.

According to Nhon Trach authorities, the completed project will ease the flooding situation in both Hiep Phuoc Town and Long Tho Commune.

Workers build an embankment along the canal.

Tran Van Nghia, who is in charge of managing the project, said that at the current rate of construction, the project will be finished early next year.

Ho Van Ha, director of Dong Nai’s Transport Department, said the drainage system in the province, which neighbors Ho Chi Minh City, has failed to keep up with the district’s rapid pace of development, resulting in urban flooding.

Currently, there are 39 flood spots across the province.
