Sugarcane juice is a popular drink that helps cool the body and boost the immune system. However, experts say it shouldn’t be consumed daily.

The drink provides natural fructose, which boosts energy and reduces tiredness, especially on hot days.

It also contains many vitamins and minerals, and is rich in antioxidants, protein and soluble fiber.

However, it shouldn’t be consumed on a daily basis. Dr. Bui Dac Sang at Vietnam Academy of Science and Technology says a normal person can gain weight if they drink too much of the juice, as an average 240-milliliter cup provides around 183 calories and 50 grams of sugar, equivalent to 12 teaspoons of sugar, higher than the recommended daily amount of 9 teaspoons for men and 6 teaspoons for women.

People who are diagnosed with diabetes, dyslipidemia, or gout should not drink too much of the juice. Pregnant women, who are more likely to have gestational diabetes, the elderly, children under 4 years old, and people who are using supplements or blood thinner medication should also not drink sugarcane juice.

Those who consume unhygienic sugarcane juice are exposed to the risk of infection and food poisoning. Hence, people with weak digestive systems, who often have dyspepsia or diarrhea, are advised to not frequently drink the juice.

Sang also suggests that adults only drink one to two cups of the juice a week, depending on their health.
