As someone interested in Vietnamese culture, Watanabe gave Thao’s invitation an instant nod, accepting to be one of the models showcasing Thao’s designs.

Thao uses traditional patterns from the 16th to 19th century on modern materials including lotus fabric, silk, chiffon, and tussah silk in her collection named "Di San - Xuyen Khong Gian" (Heritage - Across the Space).

Though this is her first time using lotus fabric in her designs, Thao instantly loved the material for being silky, smooth, crinkle-free, and environmentally-friendly.

"It took me a lot of time to find the suitable materials, dig up historical papers, and consult with traditional clothing experts in [the imperial city of] Hue," Thao said. "I’m excited to introduce Vietnamese culture to international friends with my fashion designs."

Thao, 44, established her name in the fashion industry in 2004 as she became the winner of the Vietnam Competition of the Mercedes Benz Asia Fashion Award.

She founded her own brand in 2005.
