Victoria Beckham makes boyfriend shirt the new 'it'

In the trending documentary, Victoria wore an oversized white button-up shirt at home for her interviews. According to The Guardian, this prompted trend spotters to buy the item for their autumn wardrobes.

Oversized shirts for women are known as "boyfriend shirts" for women who wear their partner’s shirts around the house. All retail figures for the style have spiked since the release of the documentary. A spokesperson for John Lewis says sales of its £45 ($54.77) relaxed cotton white shirts have quadrupled.

At retailer Jigsaw, cotton poplin shirts with side splits and scooped hems are "flying off the shelves." Creative director, Jo Sykes said: "For years we were trying to persuade customers to try a larger and more ‘manly’ type of shirt. Now we can’t keep hold of them."

British Vogue said the item slowly turned into a trend after it was promoted on a viral video of Cindy Crawford’s daughter Kaia Gerber walking the runway in an oversized toothpaste-white shirt.

"If you buy one new thing, make it a white shirt," the magazine wrote.

On TikTok, users suggest buying a white shirt one or two sizes larger than usual in order to achieve the oversized aesthetic.

The Beckham documentary was released on Netflix on October 4. It follows David Beckham’s rise from humble beginnings to a global football superstar, including stories of his marriage with Victoria, known as a member of Spice Girls, one of the best-selling groups of all time. Shortly after its release, the documentary climbed to the top of Netflix’s most-watched programs in multiple countries.
