Myanmar has extended its visa-on-arrival scheme by another year for tourists arriving by air from China and India, the world's most populous countries, as it seeks to attract more foreign visitors.

The extension, approved by the Ministry of Culture, Hotels and Tourism, runs from Aug. 30, 2026 to Aug. 29, 2027, marking the third one-year trial period for the scheme, Xinhua News Agency reported.

Myanmar received over 700,000 foreign visitors in the first eight months of 2026, up 7% year-on-year, according to the ministry.

Thailand and China were the largest sources of visitors during the period.

Southeast Asian countries have recently stepped up promotion campaigns and eased visa requirements for travelers from major economies to boost tourism growth.

Malaysia waives visa requirements for Chinese and Indian tourists, while Singapore also offers visa-free entry to Chinese tourists.
