I am a dual citizen of Vietnam and the U.S. My Vietnamese passport expired during the Covid-19 pandemic while my American passport is still valid.

If I want to enter Vietnam to visit relatives, do I need to apply for a Vietnamese visa despite being a citizen? (Kim Minh)

Answer:

A representative of a Vietnamese travel company that offers visa services said since the currently valid visa is American the person indeed has to apply for a visa to enter Vietnam.

Vietnamese passports are valid for 10 years, and once it expires its holder will not be able to enter or exit the country. They need to get their passport re-issued.

Holders of Vietnamese passports who want to apply for a new passport can visit or send their documents to competent agencies in the U.S., namely the Vietnamese embassy in Washington, D.C. and the Vietnamese consulates in New York City, San Francisco (California) and Houston (Texas).
