The Thai government plans to issue a 90-day visa for foreigners who want to train in Muay Thai with an eye on fostering sports tourism.

A regular tourist visa allows a maximum stay of 60 days but the Muay Thai one would allow 90 days.

But the government has not said when it would start issuing the new visa.

Muay Thai, also known as Thai boxing, is a combat sport that uses stand-up striking, sweeps and various clinching techniques.

"We are not only thinking of granting a special visa for Muay Thai, but also for other soft power activities such as Thai dancing, Thai music, and learning to cook Thai food," Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said in a post on X.

"We are preparing to consider granting visas for them next."

Thailand received 28 million foreign visitors last year and targets 35 million this year.
