Matsumoto Fumi, chief representative of the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) in Vietnam, said Vietnamese tourists spend significant amounts on products like household appliances, clothing, watches, and health foods.
Their average spending has exceeded the target set by the Japanese government of 200,000 yen, he revealed.
A survey by JNTO between July and September found the average length of stay for Vietnamese tourists is 6-7 days, with most visiting Japan for the first time and typically seeking cultural, culinary and shopping experiences.
The number of Vietnamese visitors in the first 10 months of this year was 530,000, a 26% increase from the same period in 2019 – before Covid broke out -- and an 8% rise from 2023.
This placed Vietnam among the top nine countries in terms of the number of visitors to Japan.
Tourism in Japan is seasonal, with peak periods being the cherry blossom season in March-April and the autumn red leaf season in October-November.
The Japanese government expects to meet its target of receiving 600,000 Vietnamese visitors this year.
If the current growth trend continues, the number of Vietnamese visitors to Japan could reach a record high.
