All foreign tourists entering Thailand from June will have to pay a fee of 300 baht (US$12), tourism minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn has said.

The money would be used to develop tourist attractions and pay for accident insurance for those unable to afford treatment, Bangkok Post reported.

Foreigners with work permits and border passes will be exempt from paying the fee.

Thailand received 11 million foreign visitors last year, making it one of the best performers in Southeast Asia.

It targets 25 million this year, including five million from a reopening China.

Many popular tourist destinations around the world plan to impose similar fees in 2023 to improve the quality of tourism services.

Venice plans to begin charging tourists visiting from summer this year €3-10 ($3.23-10.77).

By November the European Union will begin collecting a tourist fee.
