Thai authorities have arrested two suspects believed to be responsible for placing explosive devices at multiple tourist destinations across the resort island of Phuket, including its international airport.

Police have successfully defused four explosive devices, according to the Bangkok Post.

These included a motorcycle packed with explosives abandoned near the passenger terminal at Phuket International Airport, two bombs found in the popular Patong Beach area on the island’s west coast, and another device discovered at Promthep Cape in the far south, The Star reported.

Police said the suspects, who are reportedly from the southern province of Pattani, provided information that led to the discovery and safe disposal of the bombs.

However, their motive remains unclear.

In response to the incident, Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra ordered all government agencies to heighten security measures and remain on high alert.

She also sought to reassure travelers that Thailand remains a safe destination for tourism.

Thailand has seen plunging tourist arrivals over concerns for kidnapping and crimes.

From Jan. 1 to June 22, foreign tourist arrivals to the country dropped by 4.24% year-on-year to 16.04 million.
