A South Korean tourist on Thursday was sentenced to six months in jail for stealing S$29,000 (US$21,000) from a friend and gambling with the money at a casino.

Song Hayan pleaded guilty to theft after being arrested by police on April 21, Channel News Asia reported.

According to the indictment, Song visited Singapore with her friend, a 30-year-old South Korean woman, on April 17, and they stayed at Marina Bay Sands Hotel.

At about 1 p.m. on April 21, Song’s friend left to go shopping. When the victim returned two hours later, Song had left.

She then looked for her transparent bag that contained S$29,000 in hundred-dollar notes, but it was missing.

She then called Song, but she did not answer, so posted an Instagram story and tagged Song, urging her to return the money.

Later she called Song and arranged to meet her at the hotel's casino. Song confessed to taking the money and using it for gambling at the casino.

The victim called the police and the arrest was made later the same day.
