Police in Thailand have detained a Qatari tourist for allegedly raping an 18-year-old Thai man in a restroom at a well-known hospital in the Sukhumvit area.

The tourist, aged 23, whose name has not been revealed, was arrested on Tuesday following a complaint by a teenage employee of a fast-food shop at the hospital, Bangkok Post reported.

The tourist intiially visited the fast-food shop and asked for directions to a toilet on October 6. The 18-year-old employee took him to a nearby restroom. However, the tourist allegedly used force to push the employee inside the restroom with him, proceeded to lock the door and raped the teenager.

The employee claimed the tourist had sexually assaulted him using force and intimidation, Pattaya News reported.

Based on security camera footage, police quickly identified the suspect.

Police said when they were preparing to execute the warrant, the tourist returned to the hospital on Tuesday with an aim of "meeting the employee again."

The tourist denied the charge and is now under custody for questioning.

If found guilty, he could face between up to 20 years in prison and a fine of between 80,000 and 400,000 baht (US$2,200-11,000) for "raping the victim with violence," under Thai law.
