The Maldives, ranked second among the world's best islands after Thailand's Koh Samui at the 2026 Travel+Leisure awards, received 1.52 million tourists during the first eight months of 2026, down 3.6% year-on-year, amid rising travel costs triggered by the Middle East war.

China remained the Maldives' largest source market, accounting for 279,410 arrivals, followed by Russia with 218,445 tourists, according to data from the Ministry of Tourism of the Maldives.

Other major source markets include the U.K., Italy, Germany and India.

The average daily tourist arrival rate also declined slightly from 6,126 visitors per day last year to 5,904 this year.

The decline in tourist arrivals earlier this year has been attributed to the conflict in the Middle East that began on Feb. 28.

The conflict disrupted key transit routes commonly used by travelers heading to the Maldives, causing prolonged disruptions to air travel.

Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Mohamed Ameen said changes to international flight routes and rising travel costs have posed challenges, particularly by weakening demand from Middle Eastern markets, according to Corporate Maldives, a leading publication for business and hospitality.

The Maldives reached a historic tourism high in 2025 by welcoming 2.2 million visitors, up 10% from the previous year and generating US$5.4 billion in receipts.
