World's 2nd most popular destination named among best countries for retirement

Spain, the world's second most popular destination last year, has ranked sixth in a list of 10 best retirement destinations in a report released by Ireland-based magazine International Living.

The 2025 Annual Global Retirement Index evaluates factors such as housing, visas and benefits, cost of living, healthcare, climate, development, governance, and affinity rating.

According to the report, Spain, which received a record 94 million international travelers last yeat to become the world's second most popular destination after France, Reuters reported. stands out as a top retirement destination due to its safety and excellent healthcare services.

Foreign retirees can enjoy peaceful evenings and lively conversations with friends, free from concerns about gun violence, political tensions, or the necessity of owning a car, it added.

For those choosing to settle in Madrid, one of Spain's most expensive cities, a studio apartment rents for around €850 ($911) per month, with utilities costing approximately €100 ($107).

However, more affordable options can be found in smaller cities and along the Mediterranean coast. In the seaside city of Alicante, furnished studio apartments start at €750 while in Albufereta Beach, seaview studios rent for around €850 ($911), the report added.

Spain's healthcare system is another major draw, covering all medical needs with no deductibles and minimal co-pays.

Beyond healthcare and affordability, Spain offers diverse climates and lifestyles. The Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts promise beachside living with 300 days of sunshine per year.

The country also has flexible visa policies for retirees, including permanent residency visas granted automatically after five years, as well as telework visas valid for up to three years.

Spaniards are known for their friendliness, curiosity about American culture, and enthusiasm for practicing English, adding to the country’s charm as a retirement haven, according to the report.

Panama was ranked the best retirement destination in the index, followed by Portugal and Costa Rica. Other countries on the list included France, Mexico, Greece, and Italy.
