To come up with a list of the best places to retire near the beach, editors of the magazine researched coastal towns and cities in the U.S. and around the world.

Other destinations on the list were Carlsbad, Beaufort and Ponte Vedra Beach in the U.S., Falmouth in the U.K., Ambergris Caye in Belize, Quepos in Costa Rica and Mazatlán in Mexico.
