A tourist's trip through Ha Giang took an unexpected turn when he adopted a chicken, forming a bond that has been drawing attention on social media.

On May 8 a Briton traveling around Ha Giang Province with a chicken tucked in his arms drew attention online, with people saying he was holding it like it were an eagle.

According to Hoang Van Khanh, a tour guide at Jasmine Ha Giang, the Briton was on a four-day tour of the province in early May.

On the first day he expressed a desire to buy a chicken after witnessing a slaughterhouse during a prior visit to Thailand.

"He said he felt sorry for them," Khanh said.

Khanh then took him to the Meo Vac Market, where the man selected a hen weighing 1.3 kg for VND158,000 ($6). He also spotted a baby goat he wanted to buy, but was declined.

From that moment the chicken became his companion. He carried it everywhere, even purchasing a leg strap in case it tried to fly away.

Surprisingly, the bird laid one egg the evening it was bought and another the next morning.

"He was so happy and kept both eggs with him the whole trip," Khanh said.

Other tourists in the group also found the chicken amusing and often played with it during rest stops.

On the final night the man even brought the chicken to a farewell party with fellow travelers.

"The next morning both he and the hen looked quite exhausted," Khanh joked.

When the group left Ha Giang, the chicken went along, too.

Khanh said he is curious about what has happened to the bird.

A representative of Jasmine Ha Giang notes that international visitors often embrace the charm of Ha Giang, enjoying its beauty and cultural experiences.

Many are drawn by the local hospitality and activities like rice farming and farm visits.

Younger backpackers in particular flock to the region to explore its nature and village life.
