Vietnam has had 5,093 sustainable accommodations recognized by Dutch online travel agency Booking.com, placing it in fifth position in the Asia-Pacific after India, Australia, Indonesia and Thailand.

These accommodations have received its Travel Sustainable badge, a credible sustainability initiative launched in November last year to provide highly coveted information to travelers all over the world looking to make more sustainable travel choices, the agency reported Friday.

To be eligible for the badge, accommodations must implement a combination of sustainable practices that meet the requisite impact threshold for their destination, according to Booking.com.

In Vietnam, sustainable accommodations are mainly in major tourist centers like Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Da Nang, Hoi An, and Nha Trang.

Many of Vietnam's high-end resorts are made of eco-friendly materials with environmental sustainability prioritized.

Globally, countries with the highest number of sustainable accommodations are Italy, France, Germany, Spain, the U.S., Brazil, India, the U.K., Greece and Poland.

A report released by Booking.com in April showed that sustainable travel has become a new trend all over the world, including in Vietnam during the post-pandemic period.

A total 96% of surveyed Vietnamese travelers responded that they want to travel more sustainably while 93% said that they would be more likely to choose a sustainable accommodation, whether they were looking for one specifically or not.
