Malaysia welcomed 28.2 million tourists in the first eight months of this year, marking a 14.5% increase year-on-year, solidifying its position as the most visited country in Southeast Asia.

"This reflects positive growth in foreign tourist arrivals in Malaysia," The Star reported citing the tourism ministry.

"It also reflects strong and sustainable momentum in the post‑pandemic period," the ministry added.

Thailand, a regional tourism rival, welcomed 21.8 million foreign visitors in the first eight months of 2025, down 7% amid safety concerns and political instability, Bangkok Post reported.

Relaxed visa policies, improved infrastructure, and increased tourism promotion campaigns have propelled Malaysia to the top as Southeast Asia's tourism champion, insiders say.

The Malaysian government has extended its visa-free policy for Chinese tourists for an additional five years, with the possibility of extending it until 2036, Bernama reported.

In 2024, Malaysia received 38 million international visitors, up 31.1% from 2023 and 8.3% higher than pre-pandemic levels in 2019.
