A video of a female tourist posing half-naked in front of the iconic Maybank sign in Malaysia's Kota Kinabalu City has gone viral, prompting police to launch an investigation.

The 10-second clip, originally posted on a Chinese social media platform, shows the woman lifting her clothes and posing in front of the signboard on Jalan Gaya Street.

Police are searching for the individual, Kota Kinabalu Police Chief Assistant Commissioner Kasim Muda said as cited by Malay Mail.

Authorities are investigating the case under the Penal Code for obscene acts, which could result in a jail term of up to five years, a fine, or both if the person is convicted, according to The Star.

The Maybank sign, located on Jalan Gaya in the central business district, first gained popularity among Chinese tourists who posted photos of it on the Chinese social media platform Xiaohongshu, attracted by the signboard’s bright backdrop. It later garnered further attention as local businesses, influencers, and tourists joined the trend.

Internet users have speculated that the woman in the video may be a foreign tourist, based on a watermark from the Chinese social media platform.

If the investigation confirms that the culprit is a foreigner, they could face additional penalties, including being barred from re-entering Malaysia, police said.
