The Malta-flagged Mein Schiff 5 cruise ship docked at SP-PSA International Port in the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau Thursday, carrying 2,370 foreign visitors, mainly Germans.

This was the largest number of foreign tourists to arrive in Vietnam on the first days of the Lunar New Year.

The tourists were greeted with flowers and gifts from local tourism officials.

Among them, 1,800 tourists visited tourist attractions in Ho Chi Minh City, before heading to My Tho in the Mekong Delta. Another 570 traveled on their private itineraries.

On Thursday night, the cruise ship is expected to continue its journey to Thailand.

Tran Thi Thu Hien, deputy director of the Ba Ria - Vung Tau Department of Tourism, said this was good news for the local tourism industry as cruise passengers are a potential source of international visitors.

Mein Schiff 5 was launched in 2016 at a cost of over $620 million. It is 295 meters long and can carry 2,700 passengers and 1,000 crew members.

On the first day of the Lunar New Year, the Silver Spirit departing from Hong Kong brought 500 American and European tourists to Ha Long in the northern province of Quang Ninh.

Vietnam has a dense network of 2,360 rivers with a total length of more than 41,900 kilometers.

In recent years, luxury river cruises have become a popular tourism product for international visitors.
