Captain Achmad Sadikin Abdurachman, CEO of AirAsia Indonesia, said in a statement on the airline's website: "This decision follows a thorough analysis of demand trends and route performance, ensuring that we focus our resources on the most sustainable and high-demand operations."
AirAsia has stated that affected passengers have been contacted directly via email and SMS and offered several options, including a full refund, a credit account for future travel with AirAsia (valid for two years), and a free flight change to an earlier date on the same route before the suspension date, Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported.
This move comes just one year after the three-times-weekly service was launched. With AirAsia's departure, Jetstar remains the only airline offering direct flights between Denpasar and Cairns, with up to four flights per week. Bali has long been renowned for its rich cultural heritage, including intricate dances, captivating rituals, and ancient temples.
Cairns is a major tourist destination, with access to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Daintree Rainforest, part of the Wet Tropics of Queensland, and the Great Barrier Reef, one of the seven natural wonders of the world.
