Vietnamese authorities are now issuing up to 6,000 visas a day to Indians, a 24-fold increase from pre-Covid times, the country's ambassador in New Delhi, Pham Sanh Chau, said.

Before the pandemic Vietnam was issuing only around 250 visas a day, and the surge has been due to the launch of new direct flights between the two countries and huge travel demand post pandemic, he told VnExpress International.

"Due to difficulties in getting visas to other destinations caused by the pandemic, Vietnam is rising as a new appealing tourist destination to Indians, especially Gen Z.

"Applying for a visa online is convenient and easy and takes just 2-3 days."

Vietnamese carriers operate 11 direct flights connecting Vietnam's tourism hotspots with Indian cities in the coming time besides eight current operational routes.

India had been one of Vietnam's growing tourism markets before the pandemic hit, with the number of Indian visitors rising from 85,000 in 2016 to 169,000 in 2019.

Vietnam has been allowing quarantine-free entry since March 15 and also scrapped Covid testing requirements.
