HCMC authorities have allowed the suspension of high-speed boat services to beach destinations Vung Tau and Can Gio with effect from Thursday following a slump in demand.

Greenlines DP, the operator of the services, had said there was little demand for them due to the latest wave of Covid-19 that has hit 30 cities and provinces, including HCMC.

The Department of Transport said the services would return to normal only after the outbreak is contained.

The services were launched in 2018.

Can Gio, an outlying district of the city, is home to the Can Gio Mangrove Forest, a biological reserve recognized by UNESCO. Vung Tau is a popular beach town.

HCMC has reported six Covid cases so far, including a woman and her two children District 3, and two coworkers in a company in the same district. Contact tracing efforts are ongoing to find the sources of infection.

More than three weeks into the new wave, Vietnam has had 1,786 cases and four deaths.
