The northern province of Ha Giang, famous for rice terraces and mountain passes, wants a plan to build Tan Quang Airport to be included in the national aviation development scheme.

In a proposal submitted to the Ministry of Transport, provincial authorities said the airport would cover an area of 388 hectares in Tan Quang Commune of Bac Quang District, around 60 kilometers to the north of Ha Giang Town.

Provincial leaders said they have prepared the land fund to build the airport and arranged the budget for land clearance.

Ha Giang is 300 kilometers from Hanoi and has become an increasingly popular tourist destination given its topography and ethnic diversity.

Vietnam has 22 civilian airports, and late last year the ministry released plans for increasing the number to 28 by 2030 and 31 by 2050, including 14 international airports.

Several provinces have recently sought approval to build airports to boost economic growth, including the northern provinces of Son La, Tuyen Quang and Ninh Binh, the central province of Ha Tinh and the southern province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau.
