Authorities in Kien Giang Province, home to Phu Quoc, has suspended all ferry and high-speed boat services connecting the mainland to the island from Monday morning due to rough seas.

There are 30 daily ferries and boat trips carrying tourists from Rach Gia and Ha Tien to Phu Quoc Island, home to many luxury resorts and long, sandy beaches.

However, Phu Quoc is being hit by heavy rains, strong winds and rough seas; therefore, all passenger boats have been suspended until the weather calms down to ensure passenger safety, said Tran Van Tai, director of the Port Authority of Kien Giang Province.

Full refunds will be available for affected passengers.

In the past few days, southwestern provinces have suffered heavy rains and strong winds.

According to the Southern Hydro-Meteorological Station, Phu Quoc waters should expect strong waves as tall as 2.5 meters on Monday.

The tourism season for Phu Quoc lasts from December to March.

Phu Quoc welcomed 1.4 million tourist arrivals in the first half of this year, reaching over 70 percent of its full-year target.

A video posted by Facebook group Phu Quoc Today shows passengers struggle to get on ferries to Phu Quoc Island on Sunday due to heavy rains.
