Passengers booked on a Delhi-to-Dubai flight faced an overnight wait after a bird strike damaged an Emirates aircraft as it landed in the Indian capital, delaying its return departure for more than 15 hours.

The return flight, originally scheduled to leave Delhi at 4:25 p.m. on Oct. 17, was rescheduled to 7 a.m. on Oct. 18, The New Indian Express reported.

In a media statement, the Gulf carrier said flight EK517 from Dubai encountered a bird strike while landing in Delhi on Oct. 17. The aircraft was undergoing necessary repairs, forcing the airline to delay its return journey, Times of India reported.

Emirates did not disclose the number of passengers affected.

The airline said it had arranged hotel accommodation for stranded passengers and apologized for the disruption.

The rescheduled flight departed Delhi at 7 a.m. local time on Oct. 18, Emirates added.

Bird strike incidents at Delhi airport have increased over the past two years. Poor waste disposal practices and meat vending near the airport were identified as major contributing factors, officials said at a meeting of the Airfield Environment Management Committee last month, Hindustan Times reported.
