A Da Nang taxi driver who charged a South Korean tourist 10 times the normal fare has returned the difference to her after the police stepped in.

A spokesperson for the Visitor Support Center of Da Nang's Department of Tourism said it had coordinated with the police to refund an amount of VND2.1 million ($89.25) to Heo Hyeyun, 35, on Wednesday.

This was the excess amount Truong Hai, 31, a Da Nang local charged her for a 4.5-kilometer trip from the airport to a hotel on Bach Dang street.

Heo arrived on the morning of December 27 and Hai approached her, offered to take her to the hotel and took her phone and canceled her Grab booking.

She reported the incident to Da Nang police. When summoned by the police, Hai admitted to gouging her.

The police said there have been a lot of similar incidents at Da Nang airport, especially involving foreigners, which affects the city's image.

On December 28 they also received a complaint that a driver charged two Korean tourists VND720,000 for a four-kilometer trip.
