Police in the Indonesian resort island of Bali have detained a British man for driving a stolen truck and crashing into the facilities of I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport.

The incident happened on Sunday as the 50-year-old man drove the truck at high speed through the barriers of a toll gate, hit the airport entrance gate before stopping just at the entrance to the international departure terminal, The Bali Sun reported.

He was chased and apprehended by airport security officers.

Footage of the truck smashing through the airport entrance gate ended up online. No injuries were reported.

An initial investigation revealed while a 24-year-old driver was sleeping inside the truck, the tourist opened the door and kicked him out.

The victim attempted to get back into the truck, but the tourist immediately drove away with the vehicle.

Police are investigating the tourist's motive and initially suspected he was drunk at the time of the incident.

The Ministry of Law and Human Rights said the tourist would be deported after serving his sentence, Jakarta Globe reported.

135 foreign nationals from 41 countries have been deported from Bali so far this year.
