Australia's New South Wales has announced it will put taxi drivers found overcharging passengers or refusing to take them on a blacklist in efforts to improve its tourism reputation.

The move came as the biggest state in Australia by population seeks to restore its tourism reputation as some taxi drivers had failed to use the meter during their trip, overcharged their passengers or refused a fare, 9News network said, quoting transport commissioner Anthony Wing.

Plain-clothes officers will appear to check drivers' activities, according to The Straits Times.

Tougher penalties will be considered and repeat offenders could be permanently banned.
