Airfares during the four-day National Day holidays from Aug. 30 have increased to two or three times the normal rates.

Millions of people are expected to flock to Hanoi to watch the military parade and troop review on Sept. 2 to mark the 80th National Day.

Flights from HCMC to the capital at convenient hours between Aug. 30 and Sept. 3 cost VND5.6-6.5 million two-way as against the regular fare of less around VND2 million.

Hotels in downtown Hanoi are never full during holidays, but now there is a shortage of rooms, particularly in prime locations.

Hotels in central areas like the Old Quarter and near Ba Dinh Square have reached 85-90% occupancy rates in the four- and five-star segments and 80% in the three-star segment.

Flights to Da Nang now cost VND3.8-4 million from Hanoi and VND3.4 million from HCMC, equivalent to the fares during the peak summer holidays in June.

Airfares to Phu Quoc Island have also shot up, costing VND5.4-8 million, or higher than fares to China and Thailand.

But hotels on Phu Quoc are experiencing occupancy rates of just 30-40% across all segments.
