Police in Taiwan's Taipei City on Saturday detained 24 female tourists from Thailand for illegally working as hostesses at an underground bar.

Their arrests came after police officers received a tip-off from residents, saying a sex bar was operating in the basement of a building on Minsheng East Road, Focus Taiwan reported.

The women entered Taiwan on short-term tourist visas and were hired to work as bar hostesses, which "entailed drinking with and engaging in intimate contact with customers," Taipei Times reported citing a source from police.

They were slapped with fines of an undisclosed amount and are awaiting deportation.

Under Taiwan’s current regulations, foreigners working illegally in Taiwan can be fined between US$980-4,900 and will be expelled from the country immediately.

Last year, police in Taiwan also arrested 30 Thai female tourists for illegally working as hostesses at an underground club in Taipei.
