Vung Tau City of the southern Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province will begin to charge parked cars on 23 streets between VND15,000-20,000 (63-84 cents) starting July 15.

Nguyen Trung Thuy, deputy chairman of the Vung Tau People’s Committee, on Tuesday said cars with 25 seats and below, as well as trucks weighing 2.5-3.5 tons, will be charged for parking. The vehicles will be charged between 6 a.m. to midnight every day.

The units tasked for charging the vehicles will be formed and managed by wards. The fees collected will be used as employee salaries and spent on road maintenance and buying equipment, among other purposes.

The move is part of a project for road and sidewalk management, proposed by the city since 2021 but which has not been implemented yet.

For now, only vehicles parked at dedicated parking lots will be charged, and vehicles for official and public use will not.

Vehicles that are parked for short durations, for purposes like picking up students, weddings and funerals, will not be charged.

Vung Tau is a popular beach destination that borders HCMC. The city spans 141 square kilometers and has a population over 500,000. The rapid increase in population in recent years has caused traffic in the city to be congested at numerous points.
