The numbers of traffic accidents and casualties were both up during the National Day holidays this year, the traffic police division said Monday.

Over the four days from September 1 to 4 there were 125 accidents that resulted in 76 deaths and injuries to 95 people.

Most of them occurred on roads and rail, with two train accidents resulting in three deaths, the department said.

Compared to last year, when the holidays also lasted four days from September 1 to 4, there were 46 more accidents.

Last year 48 people had been killed – meaning the number was 58% higher this year – and 51 injured in accidents.

Also this year traffic police officers across the country dealt with around 35,000 cases of violations, slapped total fines of VND72 billion ($2.99 million), impounded 520 cars and 12,000 motorbikes, and revoked 7,200 licenses.

The most common violation was drunk driving, which accounted for 9,400 cases.

Some 6,200 people were caught speeding.
