Thick smoke from burning straw obstructed the vision of a truck driver on an expressway in Kien Giang Province Monday, and the result was a rear-ender.

The truck and the car it hit were traveling on the Lo Te - Rach Soi Expressway in Tan Hiep District in the Mekong Delta province.

The impact sent the car crashing off the expressway and into a surrounding area. While there were no casualties, the car was damaged.

Nguyen Thanh Toan, a driver who witnessed the accident from behind, said smoke had shrouded 100 m of the road, obstructing visibility for drivers.

Video footage from a vehicle shows smoke from burning straw on the Lo Te-Rach Soi Expressway section in Kien Giang on Feb. 26, 2024.

It was the second such accident in a week caused by smoke, according to the expressway's rescue center.

Nguyen Thanh Ngoan, who works as a rescuer on the expressway, said there are fields along the sides of the road, and farmers burn straw during the harvest season.

Even if the fires are lit far away from the road, the flames easily spread to dry weeds next to the road. He added.

Two years ago 10 cars were involved in a pileup caused by smoke, and three people were injured.

The 51-km Lo Te-Rach Soi Expressway was built in 2021 to connect Kien Giang and An Giang provinces and Can Tho City.
