Construction of two airport terminals, HCMC's Tan Son Nhat Airport and Dong Nai's Long Thanh Airport, worth over VND45 trillion ($1.89 billion) in total, begins Thursday.

The Long Thanh Airport terminal will cost VND35 trillion, span 150 ha, and include four floors with space for 40 plane gates. It is expected to open in 2026.

The terminal, considered to be the "heart" of the airport itself, has a lotus-themed design and will be equipped with artificial waterfalls and gardens.

Besides the terminal, the new Long Thanh Airport will also see a runway spanning 4,000 m and other infrastructure to be built. The accompanying infrastructures are expected to cost over VND10 trillion.

The construction unit for the terminal would be the Vietur consortium, composed of 10 members, including domestic contractors like Ricons, Newtecons, Sol E&C, Vinaconex and CC1. The leading unit would be Turkey's construction corporation Ic Istas.

The Long Thanh Airport is planned to have a capacity of transporting 100 million passengers and 5 million tons of goods a year, replacing Tan Son Nhat, located less than 50 km away, as Vietnam's largest airport. The airport has a total investment capital at around $16 billion.

At the same time, the T3 terminal of Tan Son Nhat Airport will also begin construction. It will have high-rise parking lots, a viaduct system and other infrastructures and services. The total investment cost will be VND10.99 trillion, and construction will take around 20 months and be ready for service in the second quarter of 2025.

The terminal will have five floors, including one underground. The total floor area will be around 112,500 m2. Once completed, the terminal will be for domestic use with a capacity of 20 million passengers a year.
