The Xiaomi SU7 electric car being burnt down on the side of a street in Changzhou, Jiangsu Province, China. Video from TikTok
Video footage shared on Chinese social media shows the car ablaze on a street in Changzhou around 8 p.m. on Nov. 10. The flames quickly engulfed the entire vehicle before firefighters arrived.
The aftermath revealed that the car’s interior had been destroyed, leaving only the frame intact.
According to Autohome, the EV had been damaged earlier that night after running over an unidentified object on a highway and was towed to the garage. No injuries were reported.
Changzhou police have confirmed the incident and stated that the cause of the fire will be announced after further investigation.
The Chinese tech giant has faced a series of controversies involving its SU7 model in recent months. In late September, a SU7 unexpectedly drove off while parked outside a store in Wehai city, with Xiaomi’s technicians attributing the incident to a remote parking command from the owner’s phone, CarsNewsChina reported.
On Oct. 13, a SU7 sedan caught fire after a crash in Chengdu, killing the driver who was trapped inside as the doors failed to open. The fatal incident has intensified scrutiny over flush car door handles, a feature on some EVs that rely on sensors and electricity to open the doors, and has prompted Chinese regulators to fast-track new national standards for car door handles, according to Bloomberg.
