New daily and weekly 5G plans have been unveiled with the lowest cost option providing 6 GB of data for just VND10,000 (US$0.39).

Viettel Telecom rolled out on Mar. 10 its new 5G packages that include a daily plan (6 GB for VND10,000) and three- and seven-day options for VND30,000 and VND70,000 with daily limits of 7–8 GB.

These are the most affordable 5G packages in the country.

VNPT and Viettel, Vietnam’s main telcos, only used to offer monthly plans starting at VND135,000 for 4 GB per day. Short-term plans cost more per gigabyte.

A Viettel spokesperson said the seven new packages offer 20–60% more data than previous 4G plans, allowing wider access to 5G at lower costs.

Some packages, priced at around VND2,000 higher per day, include free access to gaming and football streaming.

Since the commercial launch of 5G in Vietnam in October 2024, pricing has remained a key concern along with network quality and coverage.

The initial lowest 5G plan was VND135,000 per month — as against VND70,000 for the 4G equivalent — but offered eight times the data capacity to meet growing demand.

Speaking to VnExpress, Affandy Johan, an analyst at Ookla Speedtest, says 5G adoption depends on network coverage, pricing and smartphone access.

Vietnam has introduced policies to accelerate 5G expansion.

Under Resolution No. 193 issued by the National Assembly on Feb. 19, telecom firms must deploy at least 20,000 new 5G base stations by Dec. 31 to qualify for a 15% subsidy on equipment costs.

Providers have been upgrading infrastructure, expanding services and lowering prices to attract users.

Vinaphone reported it has three million 5G subscribers, while Viettel reached 5.5 million after a surge in sign-ups during its limited-time VND50,000 Lunar New Year offer.

The rapid adoption of 5G has improved Vietnam’s internet ranking.

According to Ookla, the country’s mobile internet speed hit 134 Mbps in January, enabling it to climb 15 places to its highest ever global position of 22nd.
